Tune in to the full episode below to hear more from Kelsey – the founder of Pitchcraft, a journalist, and a new mom!
Have you ever wondered how to balance a successful career with a fulfilling family life? In my conversation with Kelsey – founder of Pitchcraft, a journalist, and a new mom – we delved into a variety of useful tips on how to manage work and family life, and how to get your business noticed.
Let’s highlight a few of the key takeaways we talked about in this episode that I think you’ll find really useful.
Start Small
Jumping right into it, Kelsey suggests starting small. Instead of trying to get into big magazines like Ink right away, try local and regional publications first. This helps you build proof and gather important business data like revenue and growth which are required by bigger publications.
Build Relationships
Building relationships – another important tip that should not be overlooked. Kelsey recommends adding value when you approach journalists or other professionals. By focusing on helping readers, you can position yourself as a valuable source rather than someone just looking for something. This can make a big difference in getting noticed.
Manage Your Emails
It may seem like a simple task, but managing your emails is so important when it comes to staying organized. Kelsey and I talked about using tools like the boomerang feature for follow-ups and tracking keywords. Even if you get a lot of emails, it’s important to stay persistent and follow a routine for managing your inbox. Kelsey biggest tip: use folders and tools to keep pitches organized.
Balance Work and Family Life
Balancing work and family life is always challenging, especially with kids. Both Kelsey and I work from home, and we discussed how we try to manage it. Setting realistic goals and protecting your time can help a lot. Kelsey and her husband take turns giving each other time off to recharge, which I find very effective.
Establish a Good Morning Routine
The importance of a good morning routine – something we often desire but don’t prioritize. Starting the day motivated can make a big difference. I like listening to motivational podcasts like Ed Mylett, Jay Shetty, or Brendan Burchard’s Daily Stoic. Brendan’s quote about the inbox being a list of other people’s tasks struck a chord with me; it’s a great reminder to prioritize what’s important.
Trust Your Intuition
Trusting your intuition, in both business and personal life. Kelsey’s bold move to start Pitchcraft, even when she didn’t feel ready, shows the power of intuition. Authentic and genuine marketing often comes from following your gut rather than sticking to traditional methods. Both Kelsey and I agree that being moms has brought us closer to this way of working.
This conversation was a real-life look into how Kelsey and I both handle our careers and family duties – from practical tips on time and email management to balancing work and home life, and staying motivated.
