Strategy, mindset & wellness to ditch the endless hustle, build systems, and grow a business that fuels your life (and have fun doing it).

Let's work together

Hey, I'm Olivia!

Nine years ago I started my business with big dreams and zero roadmap, now I run two businesses while helping 400+ ambitious founders think bigger, live outside the lines, and create a business that fuels their dream life.

Let's connect:

If you’ve ever felt like marketing is the enemy in your business, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions I get from service-based entrepreneurs: how do I market my business in a way that doesn’t feel salesy, and how do I do it without relying on Instagram?

After nine years of marketing multiple businesses (and experimenting with pretty much every platform out there, blogging, podcasting, Pinterest, even a very brief TikTok phase), I’ve learned that marketing doesn’t have to mean burnout, content overwhelm, or feeling like you have to show up everywhere at once.

In this post, I’m breaking down why marketing feels so hard right now, how to reframe the mindset around selling, and my favorite marketing strategies without Instagram that actually work for ambitious founders who don’t have time to post 24/7.

Why Marketing Feels Like the Enemy

If you look at your goals for your life and your business, visibility is what gets you there. It’s not the only answer, but consistently getting in front of the right people, even a small, targeted group, changes everything.

So why does marketing feel so overwhelming?

Part of it is the ever-changing landscape. Platforms shift constantly, algorithms change, and as consumers ourselves, we feel saturated by content, which makes us assume our own audience feels the same way. Add in the pressure to be on every platform at once, and marketing quickly starts to feel unsustainable.

That was my biggest mistake early on: trying to do it all instead of going deep on what actually worked.

But whether you’re overwhelmed, tired of trying strategies that don’t convert, or simply don’t have the time, marketing is still one of the most important parts of running a service-based business. The good news is that there’s a way to do it that doesn’t require constant content creation or feeling like you’re “selling.”

Reframing the Mindset Around Selling

Selling your services is not salesy. You are a business owner, and it’s your job to show potential clients why they should choose you. The belief that marketing feels sleazy is usually a limiting belief rooted in something deeper, often a subconscious fear around visibility, showing up, or worrying about what other people will think.

Marie Forleo has a quote that stuck with me early in my business journey: marketing is the lifeblood of your business. It’s not optional. It’s not something to put on the back burner once client work picks up.

And here’s the truth: it’s not that you don’t have time for marketing. It’s that it hasn’t been made a priority yet. That’s the first shift that needs to happen before any strategy will work.

How to Pick the Right Platform for Your Business

Before diving into specific marketing strategies without Instagram, it’s important to get clear on where to focus your energy. Trying to show up everywhere is a fast track to burnout.

Instead, pick one platform to focus on for the next three to six months. Ask yourself:

  • Where is my ideal client actually hanging out?
  • Where have my best clients come from in the past?

Marketing is a long game. If you post once and expect a client the next day, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment. Real results from a marketing strategy typically show up over six months to a year, not overnight.

Marketing Strategies Without Instagram

If you’re a service-based entrepreneur looking for marketing strategies without Instagram, here are the ones that have worked best in my own businesses.

Referrals

Referrals feel natural and often convert quickly, especially when they come from past clients who were a great fit. To generate more of them intentionally:

  • Set up short “coffee connection” calls with complementary businesses in your niche
  • Pitch yourself for guest workshops or guest podcast interviews
  • Build genuine community and relationships instead of transactional networking
  • Create a past-client referral payout system that runs automatically in your CRM

Pitching Past and Existing Clients

A lot of business owners focus so much on finding new clients that they forget the ones they already have. Building a clear offer ascension ladder, like branding leading into a website project, or a strategy call leading into an ongoing coaching package, makes it easy for past clients to keep working with you.

Having simple systems and processes in place also makes clients more likely to return and refer you, because working with you was easy from start to finish.

Email Marketing

Email marketing works quietly in the background once you have a proper funnel in place: a freebie that attracts the right people, a nurture sequence that builds trust, and a clear call to action toward your offer. It’s one of the most sustainable marketing strategies without Instagram because it doesn’t require daily content creation.

Pinterest

Pinterest continues to be a strong, evergreen way to drive traffic without the pressure of constant posting or trends.

Leveraging Instagram (If It’s Your Platform)

Instagram isn’t the enemy either, it’s simply one tool among many. If it’s where your ideal client is hanging out, the key is to experiment with content types, then double down on what actually works instead of trying to do everything.

And remember: it’s still a long game. Consistency and quality matter more than volume.

Make Marketing Easier With Systems

The easiest way to remove overwhelm from marketing is to build simple systems and templates, whether that’s ready-to-go social graphics for every client project, a repeatable email sequence, or a checklist for podcast promotion. Systems mean marketing doesn’t have to live entirely in your head.

The Bottom Line

Marketing isn’t the enemy. It’s the lifeblood of your business, and it doesn’t require you to be everywhere at once or post content that feels inauthentic. Get clear on where your ideal client is, choose one platform to focus on, and build simple systems that support consistency over time.
